The jewelry sector's exports have drawn attention with their positive momentum in recent years. According to data compiled from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM), Turkey's exports recorded a decrease of 1.8% last month, amounting to 22 billion 7 million dollars. Turkey's jewelry exports increased by 14.4% in the January-September period compared to the same period last year, reaching 5 billion 388 million 374 thousand dollars. In September, however, the sector's exports decreased by 3.1% compared to the same period last year, totaling 673 million 526 thousand dollars.
JEWELRY SECTOR'S SHARE IN EXPORTS IN THE FIRST 9 MONTHS IS 3.2%
In the January-September period, the jewelry sector's share in total exports was calculated to be 3.2%.
When looking at the export figures of the jewelry sector's subcategories, there were 3.8 billion dollars worth of jewelry and goldsmith items made of gold, 270.8 million dollars worth of jewelry and goldsmith items made of silver, 1.1 billion dollars worth of unprocessed or semi-processed gold, 5.9 million dollars worth of unprocessed or semi-processed other precious metals, 46.2 million dollars worth of unprocessed or semi-processed silver, 2.3 million dollars worth of other items made of precious metals, 82.1 million dollars worth of scrap and waste of precious metals or metals coated with precious metals, 8.2 million dollars worth of watches, parts, and accessories coated with precious metals, 9.2 million dollars worth of cultured pearls, precious and semi-precious stones and items made from them, and 9.1 million dollars worth of imitation jewelry exports.
THE MOST EXPORTS TO THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
The highest exports in the jewelry sector were made to the United Arab Emirates, amounting to 1.9 billion dollars, followed by the USA with 517.4 million dollars, Hong Kong with 410.5 million dollars, Iraq with 387.1 million dollars, and Mexico with 242.2 million dollars.
The UAE also ranked first in export growth. In the January-September period, the jewelry sector's exports to the country increased by 355.3 million dollars. Following the UAE in export growth were Iraq with 288.9 million dollars, Libya with 142.9 million dollars, Mexico with 84.4 million dollars, and Kyrgyzstan with 78.5 million dollars. The jewelry sector exported 219.8 million dollars to Libya and 214.5 million dollars to Kyrgyzstan.
THE MOST EXPORTS FROM ISTANBUL
When looking at the provinces, the highest exports in the jewelry sector in the first 9 months were made from Istanbul, totaling 3.7 billion dollars. During this period, exports from Çorum amounted to 1.6 billion dollars, from Kastamonu to 50.6 million dollars, from Ankara to 25.3 million dollars, from Izmir to 4.8 million dollars, and from Gaziantep to approximately 4 million dollars.
10-YEAR EXPORT PERFORMANCE FROM JANUARY TO SEPTEMBER
A significant increase was observed in the analysis of the jewelry sector's exports over the past 10 years from January to September. The sector's exports recorded an increase of nearly 3 times in the January-September periods of 2024 compared to 2015.
In the first 9 months of 2023, jewelry exports amounted to 4 billion 700 million 809 thousand dollars, reflecting a 12.7% increase compared to the same period last year. Based on the January-September periods, jewelry exports in 2022 were 4 billion 171 million 524 thousand dollars, showing a 7.1% increase, while in 2021, it was 3 billion 883 million 637 thousand dollars, marking a 57.4% increase.
DECLINE OBSERVED IN 2019 AND 2020
A decline was observed in the jewelry sector's exports in 2019 and 2020. In the January-September period of 2020, jewelry exports decreased by 22.3% to 2 billion 456 million 958 thousand dollars, while in 2019, it was recorded as 3 billion 171 million 109 thousand dollars, reflecting a decrease of 6.9% compared to the same period of the previous year.
The sector's exports in January-September 2018 showed a performance increase of 36%, reaching 3 billion 413 million 720 thousand dollars, while in the same period of 2017, it was 2 billion 519 million 175 thousand dollars, marking a 55.9% increase.
