Ferhat İnne, who killed Canan Çeviren with whom he had a romantic relationship in Manisa, was sentenced to life imprisonment for "intentional murder." Although the Supreme Court overturned this sentence twice on the grounds that no reduction was applied, the life sentence was upheld for the third time. The lawyer for the Çeviren family stated, "Justice has been served, even if just a little. This decision by the Supreme Court is a precedent for the hundreds of women murdered in our country."

Ferhat İnne, a 45-year-old married man with one child from Manisa, went to the real estate office in Yeni Mahalle where 42-year-old Canan Çeviren, a mother of two who divorced her husband on December 11, 2020, was working. A dispute arose between İnne and Çeviren, who were alleged to have a romantic relationship. Ferhat İnne pointed the gun he brought with him at Canan Çeviren and fired. Çeviren died, and those moments were captured on security cameras. İnne, who surrendered to the police, was arrested.

UNDISCOUNTED LIFE SENTENCE WAS GIVEN

A case was opened against Ferhat İnne at the Manisa 5th High Criminal Court for the crime of 'premeditated murder' with a request for aggravated life imprisonment. In the decision hearing held on February 8, 2022, the court sentenced İnne to an undiscounted life sentence.

THE APPEAL COURT APPROVED

Filiz Tuğçe Ayrancı İplikçi, the lawyer for Çeviren's family, found the sentence too lenient and requested that Ferhat İnne be given an aggravated life sentence; İnne's lawyer appealed the decision to the appeal court for a reduction based on provocation. The İzmir Regional Court of Appeals 1st Criminal Chamber, in its decision on May 18, 2022, upheld the local court's decision and confirmed the life sentence given to Ferhat İnne.

THE SUPREME COURT OVERTURNED THE DECISION TWICE

The decision was appealed to the Supreme Court. On January 30, 2023, the Supreme Court overturned the life sentence given to İnne. In the unanimous decision, it was stated that the defendant Ferhat İnne did not leave the scene after the crime, called health and law enforcement from his own phone, and that his personality, clean past, social relations, and positive behavior during the trial process should be taken into account, and that 'discretionary reduction' should not be applied. Following this overturning decision, the Manisa 5th High Criminal Court retried İnne and again sentenced him to life imprisonment on May 16, 2023. On December 11, 2023, the Supreme Court overturned the decision for the second time and decided that a discretionary reduction should be applied to İnne.

THE COURT INSISTED ON ITS DECISION, GIVING AN UNDISCOUNTED LIFE SENTENCE FOR THE 3RD TIME

Ferhat İnne's retrial at the Manisa 5th High Criminal Court continued on February 6, 2024. For the first time, İnne was brought to the courtroom. The prosecutor requested compliance with the Supreme Court's overturning decision in his opinion. After hearing Ferhat İnne, the court panel announced its decision, once again giving the decision that the Supreme Court had overturned twice, and sentenced the defendant İnne to an undiscounted life sentence for the crime of 'intentional murder' by a majority vote.

THE SUPREME COURT LIFTED THE OVERTURNING DECISION

The 1st Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court made its decision regarding Ferhat İnne, who was given an undiscounted life sentence for the 3rd time by the Manisa 5th High Criminal Court. In the decision made by a majority on November 27, 2024, it was decided to lift the overturning decision made on December 11, 2023.

In the decision, it was emphasized that the local court's insistence was based on the fact that the defendant did not make any attempt to save Canan Çeviren, who was injured after the act, and that he fired directly at the vital area of the victim, blaming the victim for his wife leaving the house due to their relationship, and that he continuously accused the victim with statements inconsistent with the file content and witness testimonies during the trial process. The decision stated, "Considering the events and the entire file content, it was evaluated that the defendant stated that he killed Çeviren, whom he blamed for his wife leaving the house, by calling his wife immediately after the incident and did not show remorse in this way, and therefore, it was not seen as an error in the court's acceptance and discretion that the discretionary reduction provisions should not be applied to the defendant, thus the insistence decision is deemed appropriate."
