A notable dialogue took place between Selman Özboyacı, the AK Party Konya Deputy representing Turkey at the Inter-Parliamentary Union United Nations Parliamentary Session, and the session's moderator. The moderator mistakenly announced Turkey's name and had to apologize after Özboyacı's warning.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union United Nations (UN) Parliamentary Session was held at the UN Headquarters in New York City, USA. Among the representatives of Turkey at the session themed on accelerating political actions for the Sustainable Development Goals was AK Party Konya Deputy Selman Özboyacı.
ANNOUNCED TURKEY'S NAME INCORRECTLY
A striking dialogue occurred between Özboyacı, who requested to speak from his seat, and the session's moderator. While giving the floor to Özboyacı, the moderator said, "Delegate from Turkey, please..." However, during this announcement, the moderator used the English term "Turkey," despite the fact that Turkey's name is officially registered as "Türkiye" in the United Nations.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT AND THE WARNING CAME AT ONCE
Özboyacı, who intervened in the situation, warned the moderator with the words, "Thank you. First of all, it is no longer 'Turkey'; it is now 'Türkiye'." After Özboyacı's warning, it was observed that the moderator apologized and referred to "Türkiye" instead of "Turkey."
