An MQ-4C Triton surveillance drone worth approximately $230 million belonging to the U.S. went missing from radar during a mission near Iran; the incident raised tensions along the Washington-Tehran line as the possibility of electronic warfare intervention was considered.
The MQ-4C Triton surveillance unmanned aerial vehicle in the inventory of the U.S. Navy disappeared from radar during its mission near the Iranian coast. The aircraft, which was conducting intelligence and reconnaissance flights at high altitude, lost all connection shortly after sending an emergency signal.
CAN STAY IN THE AIR FOR 30 HOURS
The Triton is known as an advanced ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) platform used to monitor maritime traffic and military activity around the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Capable of staying in the air for approximately 30 hours and equipped with wide-area search radar, the system is considered one of the most critical air assets of the U.S. in the region.
CLAIM OF ELECTRONIC INTERFERENCE
Military sources in the region reported that the unmanned aerial vehicle's electronic systems suddenly went offline, drawing attention to Iran's electronic warfare capabilities stationed in the area. It is known that Iran possesses advanced electronic warfare systems capable of disrupting satellite communications and GPS signals. Following the incident, it is assessed that the loss of control of the Triton occurred as a result of electronic interference.
THE MOST EXPENSIVE AIRCRAFT IN THE INVENTORY
Valued at approximately 230 million dollars, the MQ-4C Triton is recorded as the most expensive unmanned aerial vehicle in the U.S. inventory. This loss represents a significant blow to Washington, not only in terms of material but also strategically.
While U.S. defense authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, no official statement has been made by Iran. Given the high tension in the region, it is noted that this development could open a new chapter of tension between the U.S. and Iran.
