In Venezuela, the toll is increasingly devastating after consecutive destructive earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 on June 24. In the disaster, where the number of fatalities has risen to 4,118, new cemeteries have been opened with emergency codes for the burial of victims.
The death toll from the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that occurred in Venezuela on June 24 continues to rise.
A statement from Venezuela’s Ministry of Communication and Information reported that the number of fatalities in the disaster has increased to at least 4,118. The number of injured remained unchanged at 16,740, while it was noted that 6,462 people have been rescued from the rubble so far. It was stated that 856 buildings were damaged, 190 buildings were completely destroyed, and 17,907 earthquake victims lost their homes.
It was reported that medical aid was provided to 29,966 earthquake victims and relief supplies to 86,794 families, emphasizing that search and rescue efforts continue with the participation of 3,454 international personnel, 30,076 local personnel, and 29,843 volunteers. It was noted that 1,171 aftershocks have been recorded since the earthquakes on June 24.
MASS GRAVES OPENED AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE
In La Guaira, Venezuela, extraordinary measures were taken for the burial of those who lost their lives following the earthquakes on June 24. At La Esperanza Cemetery on the highway connecting Catia La Mar and Carayaca, a mass grave was created to bury hundreds of people whose relatives could not be reached.
HUNDREDS BURIED IN THE SAME LOCATION
In the mass grave opened as part of the emergency, the bodies of identified earthquake victims along with hundreds of unidentified individuals were also buried. Aerial footage from the region revealed the extent of the humanitarian disaster following the earthquake.
