Work on determining the minimum wage figure to be implemented in 2025 is nearing completion. The Minimum Wage Determination Commission is expected to set the new minimum wage during its fourth meeting, which will take place on Tuesday or Wednesday. It has been learned that the employer, who has raised curiosity with their proposal, is not favorably inclined towards TÜRK-İŞ's demand of 29,583 lira, while the government's approach will be quite influential in the bargaining process.

The process of determining the new minimum wage, which directly concerns more than 7 million employees and indirectly affects the entire society, is ongoing.

THE EYES OF MILLIONS ON THE 4TH MEETING

The Minimum Wage Determination Commission, hosted by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, held its first meeting on December 10, its second meeting on December 16, and its third meeting on December 19. The fourth meeting is expected to take place this week. In the final meeting, which will be held on Tuesday or Wednesday, the Commission is expected to determine the new minimum wage figure.

ALL EYES ON THE EMPLOYER'S OFFER

After TÜRK-İŞ's demand for a 45% inflation increase on the current net minimum wage of 17,002 lira, followed by an additional 20% welfare share on the resulting figure, all eyes have turned to the employer's offer. It has been learned that the employer side, which wants the employer support for the minimum wage to continue to increase this year, is not favorably inclined towards TÜRK-İŞ's demand of 29,583 lira. The government's approach during the bargaining process will be of critical importance.

POSSIBLE INCREASE SCENARIOS

TÜRK-İŞ's demand for an increase corresponds to a 74% rise, and considering some of the increase scenarios discussed in the public, the estimated figures for the new minimum wage are approximately as follows:

  • With a 30% increase, net 22,103 lira
  • With a 35% increase, net 22,953 lira
  • With a 40% increase, net 23,803 lira
  • With a 45% increase, net 24,653 lira
  • With a 50% increase, net 25,503 lira.

HOW IS THE MINIMUM WAGE DETERMINED?

The minimum wage is determined by the Minimum Wage Determination Commission, which consists of 15 members, with five representatives each from workers, employers, and the government, as required by law. The Commission meets on the dates determined in December as part of the new minimum wage studies.

The commission, chaired by one of the members designated by the Ministry, convenes with the participation of at least 10 members and makes decisions by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the side with the president is considered to have the majority.

CURRENT MINIMUM WAGE IS NET 17,002 LIRA

The minimum wage is currently applied as a gross monthly amount of 20,002 lira and 50 kuruş for a worker, resulting in a net amount of 17,002 lira and 12 kuruş after deductions. The total cost of the minimum wage to the employer is 23,502 lira and 94 kuruş for one worker. Of this, 20,002 lira and 50 kuruş is the gross minimum wage, 3,100 lira and 39 kuruş is the social security premium, and 400 lira and 5 kuruş is the employer's unemployment insurance fund.
