İhlas News Agency (IHA) Iğdır reporter Sebahattin Yum reported an incident during the ceremony held on September 19 Veterans Day with the headline "There is an umbrella for the governor, but not for the veteran." Following the news, journalist Sebahattin Yum was detained for questioning.
"JOURNALIST DETAINED" NEWS ALSO LEADS TO DETENTION
IHA Iğdır Reporter and Iğdır Journalists Association President Ercan Tunç, who captured Yum's exit from the police department, was also detained.
"WE SAID WE WROTE WHAT WE SAW IN OUR STATEMENT"
Regarding the issue, Yum stated, "While writing the news in the office, the doorbell rang, and two officer friends came in. They said my statement would be taken. I asked about the issue, and they said they did not know what it was about. First, we went to the hospital for a health report. After getting the report, we went to the police. They said the issue was related to the news we did on September 19. We learned that it was the news 'There is an umbrella for the governor, but not for the veteran.' Iğdır Governor Ercan Turan had filed a complaint against me. It was claimed that misleading information was given to the public. We said in our statement that we wrote what we saw," he said.
GOVERNOR'S OFFICE STATEMENT: HAS BEEN MAKING FALSE NEWS AND SHARING FOR A LONG TIME
Meanwhile, following the events, a statement was made by the Iğdır Governor's Office regarding the issue. The statement included the following: "The person named S.Y., IHA Iğdır Representative, was taken into custody on October 14, 2025, as a suspect under Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code (Publicly Disseminating Misleading Information) based on the criminal complaints made to the Iğdır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the news 'There is an umbrella for the governor, but not for the veteran.' He was released around 17:05. Additionally, upon the instruction of the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, his statement was taken by the Provincial Gendarmerie Command regarding a different news aimed at disinformation and he was released.
The mentioned person has been making false, misleading news and shares aimed at creating a negative perception in the public about our Governor's Office, Provincial Special Administration, and public institutions in our province for a long time. In this context, it is assessed that the IHA Regional Directorate and the agency's upper management have also been misinformed from time to time regarding the systematically prepared news.
“ACTION WAS TAKEN DUE TO FLYING DRONE WITHOUT PERMISSION FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES OUTSIDE OF JOURNALISTIC ACTIVITIES”
Despite constructive discussions with both the IHA Regional Directorate and the provincial representative during the process, no correction or retraction was published in accordance with journalistic principles; on the contrary, biased news targeting public institutions continued.
In discussions with agency officials, it was reported to our Governor's Office Press and Public Relations Directorate that the provincial representative S.Y. was subjected to action by the Provincial Police Department for flying a drone he used for commercial purposes without permission, and that negative news related to the institutions was made based on this.
Finally, a news that does not reflect the truth was made using a short footage regarding the Veterans Day program held on September 19, 2025, titled "There is an umbrella for the governor, but not for the veteran." In this news, only a short excerpt from the program was used to create a false perception in the public. Our martyr families and veterans immediately reacted to this news and stated that they rejected the situation by making a press statement, and they filed a criminal complaint with the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The mentioned events have been brought to justice and are at the discretion of the independent Turkish judiciary."
