Some citizens who did not want to return to their homes after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Silivri in Istanbul spent the night outside.
THEY SLEPT IN CARS
While some citizens stayed in tents they set up in various parks in Fatih, others preferred to sleep on the mattresses they spread on the ground. Some citizens were seen sleeping in their cars.
THE MOSQUES WERE ALSO CROWDED
After the statement from the Istanbul Governorship, the mosques that were open for citizens throughout the night became one of the preferred places for citizens to sleep.
THEY SPENT THE NIGHT IN THE MOSQUE
Moments of citizens sleeping inside the Şehzade Mosque in Fatih were captured. Citizens tried to spend the night in the mosque, protecting themselves from both the cold and the earthquake threat.
THEY COOKED FOOD BY MAKING A FIRE
Those who set up tents in Kağıthane Hasbahçe Recreation Area and Zeytinburnu beach made food by starting a fire. Some brought their beds, blankets, and pillows from their homes to prepare. Others lit a fire and wrapped themselves in blankets. Families gathered in the tents set up in the park, while children played games.
"IT'S VERY COLD, WE GOT COLD"
Murat Taşdemir, who spent the night in the recreation area, said, "I had a lot of trouble, I was at work anyway. I was startled, I shook. I thought a digger was working somewhere. Then I went out, I was waiting for the buildings to collapse. Since I work in an open area, there are only buildings around me. It's very cold, we got cold."
"WE CAME HERE AS A PRECAUTION"
Erdal Doğan, who spent the night outside, said, "We left the house during the earthquake, we ran here. We are waiting here. There is nothing in the buildings, but we still came here as a precaution. If we shake again the day after tomorrow, we will come here again."
