Italian-born phenomenon Linda Martino, who gained fame on social media with her oriental dance videos, was arrested in Egypt on charges of "performing seductive movements" and "exposing her private parts."

Linda moved to Egypt a few years ago to build a career in oriental dance and has reached over 2 million followers on Instagram. Her performances in various nightclubs, accompanied by Egyptian songs, have been viewed millions of times on social media.

However, authorities launched an investigation, claiming that a video of her performance in traditional dance attire was "immoral." The prosecution stated that Linda "wore provocative clothing and displayed sexually suggestive dance figures."

According to officials, these videos are contrary to Egypt's "social values and family structure." Linda denied all allegations, stating:

"All my dance performances are conducted with legal permits, and there is no immoral element in the videos. This content is solely for entertainment purposes."

Although oriental dance is not banned in Egypt, videos shared on social media must comply with the country's cultural rules.

In recent years, especially under President Sisi's administration, pressures have increased on artists and social media influencers accused of behaving contrary to public morality. At least five other oriental dancers, like Linda, have been imprisoned on similar grounds.

Egypt hosts 18 million tourists each year, and the tourism sector accounts for 10% of the country's economy. However, outside tourist areas, it is alleged that police take bribes, and sometimes even foreign tourists are detained on false charges.

Even a former British ambassador described Egypt as "a police state."
