The cost of a simple tea chat is now burning a hole in the pocket. The tea, which used to be consumed for 4-5 lira, has become a luxury with the increase in costs, reaching 10 lira in tea houses and 250 lira in prestigious cafes and hotels.
THE CHEAPEST TEA HOUSES AND TEA GARDENS
According to the Istanbul Tea House and Coffee Shop Tradesmen's Chamber, the price of tea in tea houses and tea gardens has been set at 10 lira. While prices in such places do not vary much from neighborhood to neighborhood, they have significantly exceeded costs, especially in prestigious cafes and hotels.
THERE ARE DIFFERENCES IN TEA GARDENS AS WELL
The price of a cup of tea in well-known tea gardens was observed to range between 20-35 lira. However, in more prestigious venues and famous cafe chains, this price has reached quite high levels.
For example, while the average tea price in cafes in regions like Beylikdüzü, Bağcılar, and Avcılar is around 25-35 lira, it can be found for 55-65 lira in Taksim, Beyoğlu, and Karaköy.
Prices vary from location to location in popular neighborhoods of Istanbul, with Yeniköy at 28, İskelesi at 45, Emirgan at 65, and in more luxurious venues in İstinye reaching up to 90 lira.
According to a report by Deniz Çağıl from Sözcü, in average cafes in Taksim and Karaköy, prices are 45-55 lira, 75 in Fişekhane, 120 in Pera Palace, 180 in Rixos Tersane, and 250 lira in Raffles Hotel.
PRODUCERS HAVE TO SELL 4 KILOS OF TEA FOR A CUP
Despite the increase in costs, the 2024 fresh tea purchase price remained low. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry announced that the fresh tea purchase price for this year is set at 17 lira per kilogram, with the support payment given to producers being 2 lira. Thus, tea growers have to sell 3.5-4 kg of tea to be able to drink tea in a prestigious venue.
BREWING TEA HAS BECOME EXPENSIVE AS WELL
For those who want to brew tea at home, tea prices have also increased. The average price of one kilogram of tea in supermarkets has risen to 230 lira, while the highest quality teas can reach 300 lira.
