Since 2019, shopping bags sold to consumers for 25 kuruş will see a price increase in the new year. Following the request of supermarkets, the price of shopping bags is expected to be around 1.5 lira.
The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has made plastic bags chargeable as of January 1, 2019, in order to prevent pollution caused by plastic waste. The bags have been sold in supermarkets and shopping centers for the amount determined by the Ministry, which is 25 kuruş, for 5 years. However, this figure is expected to change in the new year.
NEW YEAR, NEW PRICE
In an article on the subject, Turkey Newspaper writer Canan Eraslan stated, "Recently, as the fee has remained very low, the use of bags has started to increase. There are even reports that some supermarkets are providing bags without barcodes to consumers. Unfortunately, more usage means more plastic waste. On the other hand, supermarkets have started saying, 'The cost of 1 plastic bag is 1.19 TL. The price should increase.' The Ministry is also preparing to raise the price. The possible price will be around 1.5 lira."
