In the 24th week of La Liga, during the match between Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao, the visiting team's forward Maroan Sannadi was subjected to racist chants from the home fans.
REFEREE STOPPED THE MATCH
In the 17th minute of the match, Athletic Bilbao's star player Inaki Williams informed the match referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez that his teammate Sannadi was facing racist remarks.
The referee, who activated the protocol against racism in La Liga, stopped the game and a message condemning racism was displayed on the scoreboard in the stadium. After the match, both Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao clubs condemned the racist attack on Moroccan-Spanish player Sannadi on their social media accounts.
"WE MUST ADDRESS THIS ISSUE TOGETHER"
Inaki Williams, speaking to the press regarding the incident, stated, "Unfortunately, this is a situation that occurs in many places, and we do not want it to happen in any stadium. We all need to address this issue together."
Athletic Bilbao's head coach Ernesto Valverde also noted that no one wants such an incident to occur and emphasized that everyone must work together to solve the problem of racism.
