57-year-old Syrian Ahmet Sahwan, who lives in the Akasya neighborhood of Antakya district in Hatay, started working as a goldsmith in Turkey 12 years ago after fleeing the civil war in Syria. Sahwan, who has a jewelry store in the city center, attended the wedding of his 25-year-old son, Muhammed Sahwan. Upon returning home after the wedding, Sahwan was shocked to find that his house had been robbed and approximately 1 million 700 thousand TL had been stolen. Following Sahwan's report, police teams arrived in the area to start working to catch the thief. Noticing that one of the thieves had a relative who was invited to his child's wedding, Sahwan shared the situation with the police. Syrian nationals I.E. and M.E.A., who were caught by the Hatay Police Department teams, were sent to prison. Sahwan, who had a total of 1 million 700 thousand TL stolen, received approximately 900 thousand TL, which was part of his money, from the police. Sahwan, who will return to his country after 12 years, expressed his gratitude to the Turkish police and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for supporting them throughout the years.
"THE PERSON WE INVITED TO MY SON'S WEDDING STOLE 1 MILLION 700 THOUSAND TL FROM MY HOUSE"
Syrian Ahmet Sahwan, whose 1 million 700 thousand TL was stolen while he was enjoying his child's wedding, said, "We have been living in Antakya for 12 years. My son's wedding was on Saturday. At the wedding, women and men were in separate halls. The wedding ended, and we came home. I was surprised when I entered the house. Someone had broken in and ransacked it. I called my lawyer, and he immediately informed the police. The police came right away. They conducted an investigation. The police caught one person, and he was someone we knew. I had invited the thief to our wedding. When looking at the cameras, two people got out of a car. One waited downstairs while the other entered the house from the balcony. The police showed me the videos and asked if I recognized anyone. One of the thieves was the son of someone we knew. He had come to our house to fix some things. He knew our house and where the money was. The thief stole approximately 1 million 700 thousand TL from the house, and we received about 700 thousand TL along with dollars. I was saddened to learn that the thief was Syrian. I had done good things for him. We helped him a lot, and I lent him money recently," he said.
"TURKISH POLICE GAVE ME HALF OF MY MONEY WITHIN 24 HOURS"
Ahmet Sahwan stated that the Turkish police delivered part of his money to him within 24 hours, saying, "The Turkish police were very concerned about us. Even if we go to Syria, we will not forget this place. No matter what we do, we cannot repay our debt to Turkey. We have formed another family and friendships. We had given the blood of 2 million people in the war with Assad. We had given 4 million refugees outside of Syria. Thank God that I am very grateful to the President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, for standing by us. We will go to the city of Hama as soon as possible. I thank the entire Turkish nation. They stood by us and supported us. They were with us in our most difficult times," he expressed.
