In a statement made at the TBMM Commission, daytime television program host Zahide Yetiş, who said, "Even though we talk about violence against women, sometimes women do it too," drew the reaction of parliamentarians. CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır stated, "If I could, I would remove those channels from the list," while AK Party Group Deputy Chairman Özem Zengin remarked, "There are horrifyingly problematic issues in these programs."

The Turkish Grand National Assembly's Research Commission on Violence Against Women and Discrimination convened under the chairmanship of AK Party Istanbul Deputy Hulki Cevizoğlu. In the commission, Zahide Yetiş, the host of the daytime program "Yeniden Başlasak," and representatives from the Television Viewing Research Inc. (TİAK) and the Radio and Television Broadcasters Professional Union (RATEM) made presentations.

ZAHİDE YETİŞ: EVEN IF WE SAY VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, SOMETIMES WOMEN DO IT TOO

Zahide Yetiş's words in the commission drew reactions. Yetiş said, "Even if we say violence against women, sometimes women do it too," prompting DEM-affiliated deputies to leave the commission. Yetiş asked, "I didn't understand why you left?"

MEHMET EMİN EKMEN: WHAT CAN THE COMMISSION LEARN FROM YETİŞ?

Yetiş's presentation in the commission caused reactions from opposition parties. Mehmet Emin Ekmen, the Deputy Group Chairman of the New Path, said in his speech at the general assembly, "What can the commission learn from Zahide Yetiş? What will this commission learn from this lady, whom the RTÜK couldn't resist and opened an investigation against? They showed a woman's -I apologize- porn video, and that wasn't even that woman. If her husband had killed her that day, who would be responsible? RTÜK opened an investigation. Is Zahide Yetiş going to tell us that she showed a fake porn video claiming it belonged to a husband’s wife on live broadcast? This presentation must be canceled immediately. This disgrace, this filth should not be allowed under the roof of the Turkish Grand National Assembly," he said.

CHP'S ALİ MAHİR BAŞARIR: AN INSULT TO WOMEN DEPUTIES

CHP Deputy Group Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır also asked, "If we are going to talk about violence against women and discrimination, what can Zahide Yetiş offer?" Başarır stated, "This is an insult to the parliament and to women deputies. While there are scientists who have dedicated their lives to this issue, is Zahide Yetiş making a presentation here? Shame on you. When I change channels in the morning, sometimes I feel embarrassed watching her. If I could, I would remove those channels from the list," he expressed.

AK PARTY'S ÖZLEM ZENGİN: TERRIFYINGLY PROBLEMATIC ISSUES ARE HAPPENING

AK Party Deputy Group Chairman Özlem Zengin commented on the morning programs on television, saying, "Right now, there is a problem with women's daytime programs in Turkey. There are terrifyingly problematic issues happening not only in the morning but also in the afternoon programs." Zengin pointed out that there is a problem that needs to be solved, stating, "As a party, we are working to ensure that these things are not on the screens; we need to work together," she said.

“THEY SHOULD COME AND SEE THE DISCOMFORT HERE”

Zengin continued her remarks: "A research commission has been established. While this commission is conducting research, it must also examine television programs. I just learned here when you mentioned it; I called the invited person and our commission chairman. They have invited all producers and hosts of morning and afternoon programs. You are asking, 'what will be learned,' but I think they should learn the discomfort here, how much what is happening harms Turkey, and how much it disrupts society. We must also make regulations after the commission completes its work. We must ensure that there are no easy methods that would lead to any discounts related to these issues, including good conduct discounts. The same applies to television broadcasting."

“THESE PROGRAMS ARE VERY HARMFUL TO TURKEY”

Zengin argued that Zahide Yetiş's invitation to the commission does not mean support for her or the morning programs. Zengin stated, "These programs are very harmful to Turkey. It is not enough to impose penalties for these programs to disappear; RTÜK must definitely take action, and I emphasize that, but beyond that, women's programs must transform into a format that is compatible with world standards, suitable for the values of people living in Turkey, and will not harm society or family. This is the responsibility of every deputy in the Turkish Grand National Assembly," she said.
