In the Kadirli district of Osmaniye, peanut producers revolted, stating that despite rising costs, traders were not offering a price for their products. The farmers, who said they could not pay their debts, announced that to make their voices heard, they were considering pouring the peanuts, for which they had put in tons of effort, into the Savrun Stream. A producer's words, "We buy the seed for 300 lira, the peanut does not sell for 50 lira," laid bare the economic hardship they are experiencing.
In the Kadirli district of Osmaniye, peanut producers stated that merchants are not even giving a price for peanuts and that peanut prices have hit bottom, saying they will pour their crops into Savrun Creek.
Farmer Nurullah Demirkıran spoke as follows:
"Prices are not encouraging at all. Prices have fallen and fallen and hit bottom. Right now, no one is even giving a price for peanuts. What shall we do? We will pour them into Savrun Creek. There is nothing left to do after this. We have debts, payments. Honestly, we are in debt up to our throats. Our input costs are very high; diesel, fertilizer, labor are at extreme levels. If a kilo of peanuts is 70-80 lira, it would save us. We are on the verge of loss. They are not giving a price right now; there is no merchant. Honestly, there is nothing to do; we will pour them into the stream, into Savrun Creek. We even brought a truck, and on top of that, shipping costs were added for nothing. Let's pour them into Savrun Creek so at least we will have protested at the same time."
"THEY ARE NOT GIVING A PRICE FOR PEANUTS"
Farmer Nedim Kaynarca, on the other hand, used the following statements:
"This year the peanut farmers' situation is dire. The rain caused trouble; some of it was left half in the field. The price is not clear either. What will happen is uncertain; they are not giving a price right now. Honestly, what will we do? We will either pour them somewhere or pour them into Savrun Creek. They are not paying the worker's wages right now. Normally, a kilo should not be below 100 lira, but no one is giving a price.
We bought the peanut seed for 120-130 lira last year; this year they say 300 lira. Right now, peanuts whose seed costs 300 lira are not selling for 50 lira. The cost per decare averages 20-25 thousand lira. Diesel is 95-100 lira per liter right now. We are forced to plant to make a living; we have no other source of livelihood. The farmer goes backwards every year. Fertilizer has skyrocketed, diesel has skyrocketed."
"THE FARMER COULDN'T EARN, IT AFFECTED US TOO"
Transporter Murat Polatkan also said: "This year the farmers' situation is miserable. Peanuts didn't make money; soy already doesn't; corn is staring us in the face. A kilo of corn is 12 lira, 13 lira. There are no farmers this year either; when there are no farmers, it affects us too and put us in a difficult situation. We cannot make money. Diesel has reached 100 lira. We cannot say anything to the farmers either; those people couldn't make money. If they don't have it, we don't either. Our situation is miserable; we couldn't make money this year. Naturally, it affected me too. We are in a difficult situation this year. May God make our end good," he said.
