In Mardin, a verdict has been reached in the trial of Polat E. and his three friends, who set up a remote-controlled bomb trap in his father's car to claim an inheritance share. The court sentenced the defendants to prison terms ranging from 6 years to 14 years and 2 months.
In the Karşıyaka neighborhood of Mardin's Mazıdağı district, a horrific incident occurred on June 30, 2024. Polat E., who harbored hatred for his brother R.E. due to mistreatment, planned with his friend Abas A. to kill his father Mehmet E. (47) and obtain a share of the inheritance.
HE SET UP A BOMB TRAP IN HIS FATHER'S VEHICLE
The bomb mechanism set up by Berkant K. was placed in Mehmet E.'s service vehicle by Baran A. Mehmet E., suspecting the bag, noticed the mechanism and left it in an abandoned building. Berkant K. then attempted to detonate the mechanism with a remote control. The explosion occurred as Mehmet E. was about to enter his residence. No one was killed or injured in the incident.
HIS SON AND HIS ACCOMPLICES WERE ARRESTED
In the investigation launched after the explosion, Polat E. and his friends Abas A., Baran A., and Berkant K. were detained and arrested. An indictment was prepared, and a case was filed in the Mardin 5th Heavy Penal Court. The indictment sought prison sentences ranging from 18 to 29 years for the defendants on charges of 'Attempted intentional murder' and 'Unauthorized possession or exchange of dangerous materials.'
VERDICT HEARING WAS HELD
The 4th and final verdict hearing of the case was held at the Mardin 5th Heavy Penal Court. Detained defendant Berkant K., the victim father Mehmet E., and lawyers were present. The detained defendants, Mehmet E.'s son Polat E. and his friends Abas A. and Baran A., attended the hearing via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBIS) from the prison where they were held. At the hearing, which began with identity verification, the public prosecutor, in his opinion on the merits, expressed the view that the defendants should be punished and their detention should continue. The defendants, presenting their defense, stated they did not agree with the opinion, repeated their previous statements, and requested release.
THE FATHER DID NOT FILE A COMPLAINT
At the hearing, father Mehmet E. argued that his son did not intend to kill him and stated that he was not filing a complaint. The defense lawyers also claimed that their clients did not accept the allegations against them and requested release. When asked for their final statements, the defendants reiterated their requests for release. Son Polat E. argued that he had no intent to kill and that the bomb mechanism did not have a lethal effect.
3 DEFENDANTS RECEIVED SENTENCES, 1 WAS RELEASED
The court panel sentenced defendant Polat E. to 14 years and 2 months, Abas A. to 13 years and 4 months, and Baran A. to 10 years and 1 month in prison for the crime of 'Attempted intentional murder,' and ordered their continued detention. The defendants were also sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison for the crime of 'Unauthorized possession or exchange of dangerous materials,' and this sentence was converted to a fine.
