A significant development has occurred in the case regarding the Alpargün Apartment, which collapsed in the earthquakes in Adana on February 6, 2023, resulting in the loss of 96 lives. The sentence of contractor Hasan Alpargün, who was previously sentenced to life imprisonment 62 times and a total of 865 years for "possible intent," was reduced to 22.5 years in prison after the decision was overturned for the second time.
FLED, SURRENDERED IN TRNC
It was revealed that Alpargün, against whom an arrest warrant was issued after the earthquake, fled to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and attempted to transfer his large sum of money from Turkey there. Alpargün, who surrendered to the police in Nicosia, was brought back to Turkey and arrested.
DECISION OVERTURNED FOR THE SECOND TIME
The heavy sentence given in the first trial was found to be unlawful and overturned by the appellate court. Although a sentence was again imposed with the "possible intent" ruling in the retrial at the same court, the case was taken to the appellate court for the second time.
"POSSIBLE INTENT" REMOVED
The 18th Criminal Chamber of the Adana Regional Court of Appeals removed the "possible intent" ruling in its latest assessment. The court evaluated the defendant's actions as "causing the death and injury of multiple people with conscious negligence" and sentenced him to 22.5 years in prison.
FAMILIES' REACTION
Families who lost their loved ones in the earthquake, attending the hearing, expressed great sorrow after the decision. The complainants reacted to the reduction of the sentence, stating that the deceased had essentially drowned due to the materials used.
REQUEST FOR RELEASE DENIED
Alpargün, who stated in his defense that he was 75 years old, undergoing treatment for colon cancer, and had various health issues, requested his release. However, the court ruled for the continuation of the defendant's detention.
