The severed finger of a 3-year-old child, whose hand got stuck in an escalator at a shopping mall in Mardin, could not be saved despite 2 surgeries.

In a shopping mall in Mardin, the finger of a 3-year-old child got caught in an escalator and severed. Despite undergoing two surgeries, the little child's finger could not be saved.

FINGER CAUGHT IN ESCALATOR

The incident occurred on April 8 in a shopping mall in the Kızıltepe district. The 3-year-old boy T.B., who was at the mall with his parents, had his hand caught in the escalator mechanism. The incident resulted in the severance of the pinky finger on his right hand. Upon notification, health, fire, and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the scene. After initial intervention, T.B. was taken to Kızıltepe State Hospital and then referred to Diyarbakır Dicle University Faculty of Medicine. The family stated that the mall management was negligent and filed a criminal complaint against those responsible.

INCIDENT ON SECURITY CAMERA

Meanwhile, security camera footage of the incident emerged. The footage shows the child running to the escalator, his father chasing behind him picking up the fallen child, noticing the bleeding and applying pressure to the finger, and then searching for the severed finger.

"NOT SAVED DESPITE 2 SURGERIES"

Melek Bay, stating that her son T.B.'s severed finger could not be saved despite two surgeries, said, "By the time we reached Diyarbakır, 3.5 hours had passed. The cells in that tiny finger died, and the tissue deteriorated. That finger remained in an unhygienic environment. When we gave it to the doctor, they said there was a 1% chance of reattachment. We hoped and requested that it be sewn back, but the finger did not take. My child underwent 2 surgeries including amputation; his stitches are still there, and we do not know what the process will be or how many more surgeries will be needed."

"GOT OUT OF FAMILY'S CONTROL AND HEADED TOWARD THE ESCALATOR"

In a written statement by the mall management regarding the incident, it was stated that the process is being closely monitored, and the following was said: "The unfortunate incident at our shopping mall on 08.04.2026 has deeply saddened us all. First and foremost, we wish a speedy recovery to our injured child and extend our condolences to the family. Camera footage and technical inspections related to the incident clearly show that our escalators have been regularly maintained and fully meet all safety and technical requirements, with no malfunction or defect prior to the incident. This fact has also been confirmed by independent occupational health and safety reports. When examining how the incident occurred, it is understood that the young child got out of the family's control and headed toward the escalator, resulting in the accident. Within this framework, there is no negligence or fault attributable to our shopping mall in the occurrence of the incident. Nevertheless, immediately after the incident, our health and technical teams intervened swiftly, and the injured child was promptly handed over to health teams, with all necessary processes meticulously carried out. Some allegations reflected in the public do not reflect the truth, and it appears that an unfair accusation of fault is being attempted to be created over the incident. All facts will be revealed through legal processes, competent authorities, and expert examinations. As a shopping mall, the safety of our visitors is our top priority. In addition, without disregarding our humanitarian and moral responsibility due to this sad incident, we respectfully inform the public that we are closely following the process."
