In France, more than 500 people were injured in the Yellow Vests’ protests on October 24. Interior Minister Nunez said that partial curfews will continue in the coming days.

MORE THAN 500 INJURED, 1,435 DETAINED

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, appearing on French channel BFMTV, made statements regarding the Yellow Vests’ protests. Nunez stated that 267 law enforcement personnel and more than 250 demonstrators were injured in the October 24 protests. Nunez, saying they had received information that there were a total of 3 seriously injured people in the cities of Toulouse, Reims and Clermont-Ferrand, noted that 1,435 people were detained nationwide as part of the protests held over the weekend.

Despite the heavy toll, Nunez argued that no serious problem occurred on October 24, and regarding opposing groups that attacked protesters in cities such as Nice and Montpellier, he used the statement “The police did not protect them (the groups).” Nunez also stated that he acknowledged his mistake regarding what happened during the Yellow Vests’ protests on October 17.

CURFEWS CONTINUE IN 10 PLACES

Nunez, stating that there are partial curfews in about 10 places in the country, conveyed that the bans imposed by provincial governorships in contact with municipalities will continue. Pointing out that partial curfew decisions are taken by provincial governorships when there is a risk of disrupting public order in the field, Nunez said, “The situation will not change much in the coming days.”

“A RACIST TERROR ATTACK”

Nunez also evaluated the attack carried out in the city of Trappes in the Yvelines province on October 23. Describing the attack as “a racist terror attack,” Nunez spoke as follows:

“What happened in Trappes is extremely serious. This is a racist terror attack. The perpetrator took action to kill people whom he thought should not be integrated into French society because they were of foreign origin.”

Emphasizing that the possibility that the attacker was schizophrenic would not change the characterization of the incident as a terror attack, Nunez said, “He is a person who acted out of hatred and racism, and he killed for this reason. This is terror.”
