A 13-year-old boy, who was playing with his friends in Sakarya, suffered a head injury when a goalpost that was not secured fell on him. After undergoing two surgeries, he began experiencing double vision. The boy's mother stated that her child's life has completely changed since the accident and that she had to quit her job. She also mentioned that she would file a lawsuit against those responsible for the negligence.
In the incident that occurred in the Darıçayırı neighborhood of the Karasu district of Sakarya, on the last day of the holiday, 13-year-old Mahmut Tunahan Güngör, who went to the cemetery with his family, fell under a rusty and partially broken goalpost after getting permission from his mother to go to the football field under the supervision of the Karasu District Youth and Sports Directorate in the neighborhood. The child, who lost consciousness, was first taken by ambulance to Karasu State Hospital, then to Sakarya Training and Research Hospital, and later to the Medical Faculty Hospital located at Kocaeli University Umuttepe Campus.
HE STARTED TO SEE DOUBLE Mahmut Tunahan, who underwent two eye surgeries here, developed a double vision (diplopia) problem. His family continues his treatment at home, making him do exercises to strengthen his eye muscles. After the incident, the child's life was almost turned upside down, and his family is preparing to file a lawsuit against those responsible for the negligence that caused the accident.
"THE DOCTOR SAID THE CONDITION COULD BE PERMANENT" Mother Zerrin Güngör said, "While playing with his friends in the field, the goalpost without a support leg fell on my son's head. When I heard the news, I immediately went to my son, and he was lying on the ground. He was first taken to Karasu State Hospital by ambulance. He was then transferred to Sakarya Training and Research Hospital with a suspicion of brain hemorrhage. As a result of the examinations here, orbital fractures were detected under his eyes, and it was said that he needed to be intervened by plastic surgery. They transferred us to the nearest hospital. My child underwent surgery, and when he opened his eyes, he couldn't turn his eye to the right or left, and he was seeing double while looking up and down. After another MRI and tomography, he had a second surgery. After this surgery, his ability to look to the right and left improved, but he continued to see double when looking up and down. When we went to the doctor, it was said that this condition could be permanent," she said.
"THEY TOLD US NOT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THEM" Güngör, who said she called the village headman while her son was in surgery, stated, "I called the headman of Darıçayırı neighborhood and explained what happened. The headman told me he was busy and had no knowledge of the incident. I told him that I would complain about everyone who was negligent. Later, the headman called the Karasu District Youth and Sports Directorate to inform them. Investigations were conducted at the scene, and afterwards, the director came to our house to convey his wishes for a speedy recovery, saying that they were ready to provide all kinds of support both materially and spiritually, and that if we complained, they would also be victims."
"HOW MANY MORE CHILDREN WILL SUFFER?" Mother Güngör, who is worried about her son's future, said, "My son's current health condition has changed. He has no self-confidence, and he cannot participate in social activities like before. We are all afraid that something will happen to him, that he will have a problem related to his eye. He cannot look up or down. This child will ride a bicycle, and he will need to look down or up and will see double. During this accident period, he fell behind in his lessons for about 1.5 months; he is an 8th-grade student and was preparing for the LGS, and he will not be able to perform well because he fell behind in his lessons. He will need to study a different field, which will change the vital direction of my son. First, my child was victimized, and then we were. I was working, and when my son had the accident, I had to quit my job because he needed care at home. We have prepared all our evidence and reports and are in the process of consulting with lawyers; we will file a complaint and sue at the first opportunity. How long will these negligence continue, how many more children will suffer, or how many families will be left in tears?" she said.
