After being found dead 18 days after going missing in Van, the body of university student Rojin Kabaiş (21) was brought to her hometown Diyarbakır and buried amid tears following autopsy procedures. At the funeral, her father Nizamettin Kabaiş and some relatives wept at Rojin's grave.
Rojin Kabaiş, a first-year student in the Department of Child Development at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYÜ), went outside after having dinner at the dormitory on September 27. When her friends could not reach Kabaiş by phone, they reported her missing to the police around 12:00 on September 28. It was determined that Kabaiş had said she would go to collect pebbles at the Van Lake shore around 18:30 on September 27 and had invited a friend to go with her, but the friend declined. On September 28, Rojin's mobile phone, headphones, cake, and water were found at the Van Lake shore. The phone was handed over to the police for examination. Rojin had told her mother, with whom she was speaking on the phone, that she would go to the market to buy coffee, water, and cake, prompting the police, Coast Guard, AFAD, and municipal fire teams to initiate a search operation.
FOUND WHILE WATERING THE GARDEN
On the 18th day of the search efforts, Rojin Kabaiş's lifeless body was found by Mehmet Emin Ankay (60), who had come to water his garden in the rural Mollakasım neighborhood of Tuşba district, about 20 kilometers away from the Van Yüzüncü Yıl University coast. Ankay, who works in construction, stated that he noticed a dark shape on the beach while he was at a friend's summer house nearby. When he approached and realized it was a female corpse, he immediately notified the gendarmerie, saying, "It was around 14:10. I noticed the dark shape. When I got closer and realized it was a body, I immediately called the authorities."
WOMEN CARRIED THE COFFIN
Rojin Kabaiş's body was handed over to her family after approximately 7 hours of autopsy procedures at the Forensic Medicine Institution. The body, placed in a funeral vehicle belonging to the Van Metropolitan Municipality, was brought to the Yeniköy Asri Cemetery in the Bağlar district of her hometown Diyarbakır. While the funeral prayer was being held here, her father Nizamettin Kabaiş fainted. After the prayer, Rojin's coffin was brought to the area where it would be buried, carried on the shoulders of women.
FATHER FAINTED
After the burial, her father Nizamettin Kabaiş and some relatives wept at Rojin's grave. The funeral was also attended by Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Serra Bucak and Van Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Neslihan Şedal.
