A piece breaking off from under a BYD vehicle moving through floodwaters in China sparked claims on social media that "the engine fell out." However, automotive experts explained that the detached part was not the engine but the vehicle's underbody protection plate. Experts noted that pressure from deep water could cause this part to come loose.
Images of a BYD Tang model advancing through floodwaters in Shenyang, China, have become a trending topic on social media. As the vehicle moved, a large piece broke off from underneath, leading many users to claim that the electric motor had fallen out.
"MOTOR FELL OFF" CLAIM TRENDS
In the footage, which was viewed millions of times in a short period, the detached part was seen dragging along, still connected to the vehicle by cables. This situation sparked comments on social media like "BYD's motor fell off."
EXPERTS DENY THE CLAIMS
Automotive experts, however, stated that the claims are not accurate. Technical evaluations indicated that the detached part was not the electric motor, but the skid plate (underbody shield) that protects the vehicle's underside. It was explained that high hydrodynamic pressure in deep water can cause such plastic or composite protective parts to come loose.
The experts also emphasized that the vehicle continuing to move and the electrical systems remaining operational in the footage indicated the motor was still in place.
BYD HAD PREVIOUSLY WARNED
Meanwhile, BYD officials had previously warned users that, despite electric vehicles having high water resistance levels, they should not enter deep puddles. The company noted that batteries having IP67/IP68 protection standards does not mean the vehicles can be safely used in deep water.
