A tourist traveling in an Uber taxi in Brazil was shot dead after the driver mistakenly entered a dangerous neighborhood.
34-year-old Diely da Silva died at the scene after the vehicle was attacked in the Vargem Pequena area, west of Rio de Janeiro. Silva, an accounting manager, was on vacation in the city before the New Year celebrations.
The 34-year-old Uber driver Anderson Pinheiro was also injured in the attack and was taken to the hospital. Military police investigating the incident, which occurred on December 28, believe the driver may have been targeted because the vehicle entered a gang area due to taking an alternative route.
For Silva, who came to Rio for a vacation from Jundiai in the state of Sao Paulo, local mayor Gustavo Martinelli stated, "It is unacceptable that violence continues to take the lives of innocent people and causes pain and suffering to many families. May God grant patience to all who face this irreparable loss."
The victim's friend Maria Alves said that Silva was inspiring, determined, and "always had a smile on her face." Maria added, "I didn't get the chance to have you as my bridesmaid at my wedding; I really wanted that. Unfortunately, the world is cruel, and violence took you from us."
Uber expressed in a statement to local media that they are cooperating with the police investigation and that Silva's family may receive compensation under the platform's insurance. The company stated, "We are deeply saddened that citizens who just want to work or travel have become victims of violence in our community. At this difficult time, we share our condolences with our user's family and hope that the authorities bring those responsible to justice as soon as possible."
