In Küçükçekmece, civil engineer Görkem Selvitop, who was waiting for a bus at a stop, lost his life in an accident caused by a minivan hitting a manhole cover and crashing onto the sidewalk. The accident report found both the minivan driver and the responsible institution at fault. Selvitop's uncle said, 'There have been many accidents on this road before. We will file complaints against both the driver and the institutions that failed to take necessary measures.'
A heartbreaking accident occurred on April 27 at around 18:30 on Turgut Özal Boulevard in İstasyon Mahallesi, Küçükçekmece, Istanbul. According to claims, civil engineer Görkem Selvitop (38), who had gotten off his workplace shuttle and was waiting for a bus at the İETT stop, was hit by a van driven by driver Ercan Ç.
YOUNG ENGINEER LOST HIS LIFE
According to the accident report, the van hit a manhole cover on the road and then mounted the curb. The van struck engineer Selvitop, who was waiting for a bus, causing him to be seriously injured. Police and health teams were dispatched to the scene upon notification. After initial intervention by health teams at the scene, Görkem Selvitop was taken to the hospital but died despite all efforts.
"VAN DRIVER HIT MANHOLE AND MOUNTED CURB"
In the accident report prepared by police teams investigating the scene, it was stated that van driver Ercan Ç. hit a dislodged manhole cover on the boulevard, lost control of the steering, mounted the curb, and struck Selvitop, who was waiting for a bus. The report found both the van driver and the entity responsible for the manhole cover at fault.
"NO MEASURES TO SLOW DOWN VEHICLES"
Speaking about the accident, Görkem Selvitop's uncle Mehmet Güner said, "My nephew Görkem Selvitop came here by shuttle from his workplace. While waiting to board another bus to go home, a speeding van from behind ran over a manhole cover in front of the lights, dragging it forward. The vehicle mounted the curb, ran over my nephew, and crushed him. There have been many accidents on this road before. There are no measures to slow down vehicles here; these need to be implemented. Therefore, we will file complaints against both the driver and the institutions and organizations that have not taken the necessary measures."
