After the winter season in Erzincan, livestock breeders who have started to take their animals out to pastures are having difficulty finding shepherds to work for a salary of 100,000 lira. One breeder stated, "Instead of hiring a shepherd for 5-6 months, we are trying to do this work with our own children. Of course, we cannot get the same efficiency from the children as we would from a shepherd."

One of Turkey's important livestock centers, Erzincan, is experiencing a rush to find shepherds. After enduring a long winter season, livestock breeders have taken their herds out to graze in the pastures. Breeders are struggling to find shepherds who will work for a salary of 100,000 lira and are having difficulty paying them.
"WE ARE TRYING TO DO THIS WITH OUR CHILDREN"
Stating that the shepherd problem in the small ruminant livestock sector is experienced in Erzincan as it is throughout Turkey, the breeder said, "The monthly costs of shepherds are not less than 100,000 lira. Additionally, we have to provide shepherds with food, drink, cigarettes, accommodation, and their needs like cheese, yogurt, and wool when they return. That's why it has been difficult to hire shepherds. Now, instead of hiring shepherds for 5-6 months, we are trying to do this work with our own children. We send 2-3 children instead of a shepherd, but they can only do the work of one shepherd. Of course, we cannot get the same productivity from the children as we do from a shepherd. Shepherds are more efficient. But what can we do? We don't have the means to pay that money to shepherds." he stated.
