In the voting at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey's General Assembly on the draft law known publicly as the "framework law" on Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Integration, a striking picture emerged in the New Party group. Despite party leader Özgür Özel announcing that he would vote "yes," 54 deputies in the group voted against the proposal.
During the framework law negotiations prepared within the scope of the Türkiye Without Terrorism process and adopted by the Parliament, New Party Chairman Özgür Özel delivered a lengthy speech criticizing the government's policies. At the end of his speech, stating that they acted with a historical responsibility, Özel announced that he would vote "yes" to the proposal, while leaving his party's deputies free in their voting decision.
ONLY 35 OF 91 DEPUTIES APPROVED
After Özel left his deputies free to heed the voice of their provinces and consciences, a great rift occurred within the party during the open vote. Of the New Party group represented by 91 deputies in Parliament, only 35 deputies approved the framework law, while 54 deputies voted "no."
