Workers digging a well in the garden of a house in Sri Lanka found a giant star sapphire cluster weighing about 510 kilograms. It was stated that the stone could be one of the largest star sapphire formations in the world, and it was claimed that its value could reach up to $100 million.
A routine well excavation in the backyard of a house in Sri Lanka resulted in an incredible discovery. Beneath the soil, a giant star sapphire cluster weighing approximately 510 kilograms was found. It is estimated that the gemstone could find buyers on the international market for up to $100 million.
A FORTUNE WAS FOUND WHILE DIGGING A WELL
The discovery took place in Sri Lanka's Ratnapura region, famous for its gem deposits. Workers digging a well in the garden of a gem trader identified only as Mr. Gamage for security reasons encountered unusual stones beneath the soil.
After the situation was reported to the authorities, examinations determined that the formation, weighing approximately 510 kilograms, was a star sapphire cluster.
IT TOOK MORE THAN A YEAR TO CLEAN
Cleaning the giant cluster, which weighs approximately 2.5 million carats, took more than a year. During cleaning, some pieces separated from the mass were identified as high-quality star sapphires in pale blue. However, experts noted that not all the stones in the cluster may be of the same quality.
ITS VALUE COULD REACH $100 MILLION
The giant formation, named "Serendipity Sapphire," was stated to be possibly one of the world's largest star sapphire clusters. Officials of Sri Lanka's National Gem and Jewellery Authority assessed that the stone could attract the interest of private collectors and museums. The final valuation of the sapphire cluster, whose value on the international market is projected to reach up to $100 million, has not yet been verified by independent international experts.
