Two cousins who went on a trip to Nemrut Caldera in the Tatvan district of Bitlis were stranded in their vehicle due to a sudden heavy snowfall. Unable to move forward in their vehicle with summer tires, the cousins were rescued through the work of teams after journalists noticed the situation and informed the authorities.
THEY DESCENDED TO THE CALDERA WITH SUMMER TIRES
The cousins named Hüseyin Toklu (20) and Adem Toklu (22), living in Muş, went up to Nemrut Caldera National Park around noon in a vehicle with the license plate 34 FTU 584 that belonged to them. The cousins, who descended to the caldera at an altitude of approximately 2,250 meters, could not move forward with their vehicle after the heavy rain effective in the region quickly gave way to heavy snowfall and the road was covered with snow.
Because their vehicle had summer tires, the cousins were stranded inside the caldera, and due to the lack of cell phone network coverage in the area, they could not call for help. As one of the cousins had previously broken his foot, Adem Toklu walked approximately 3 kilometers to the top of the caldera in order to find help.
HE COINCIDENTALLY MET JOURNALISTS
Upon Toklu's request for help after he coincidentally encountered journalists who were in the area to do a news report, the journalists sprang into action. Through the efforts of the journalists, who informed the 112 Emergency Call Center and Tatvan District Governor Yiğit Yaşar Demirer about the situation, teams were dispatched to rescue the stranded cousins.
Gendarmerie teams affiliated with the Tatvan District Gendarmerie Command, the National Medical Rescue Team (UMKE), and 112 Emergency Health teams, who reached the area in a short time, launched a joint rescue operation. While first aid was administered to Adem Toklu, one of the cousins who was taken into their vehicle by the gendarmerie teams and warmed up, work was started to reach Hüseyin Toklu, who was stranded in the vehicle inside the caldera.
TEAMS DESCENDED INTO THE CALDERA IN BELOW-ZERO WEATHER
In the area at an altitude of 2,250 meters, where the snow depth reached approximately 15 centimeters and the air temperature dropped below zero, teams descended into the caldera despite the difficult conditions and reached Hüseyin Toklu. It was observed that Toklu, who tried to move the vehicle forward to a certain point using his own means, was affected by the cold.
Hüseyin Toklu, who received first aid at the scene, was taken into the UMKE vehicle and brought up to the caldera summit, where he was handed over to the waiting 112 Emergency Health teams.
The two cousins, whose health conditions were reported to be good, were handed over to their relatives after checks performed while standing.
