Australian tourist allegedly caught having sex in Bali. Identified through security camera footage, Aspinall will be deported.
Billy Aspinall, a 27-year-old Australian tourist allegedly caught having sexual intercourse with a woman in a public area in Bali, was arrested after security camera footage emerged. It was announced that the young man would be deported to Australia following the legal process against him.
Aspinall, who lives in Brisbane, was detained by police when he arrived at Denpasar Airport on Wednesday to return to Australia. Authorities stated that the decision was made after security camera footage that quickly spread on social media.
The incident allegedly occurred on Saturday night in Tibubeneng village in the North Kuta area. The footage allegedly shows a man and a woman engaging in a sexual act outside a house.
After the footage spread online, police launched an investigation and placed Aspinall on a watchlist for indecent behavior in a public space.
Warned the homeowner couple
According to the claim, the homeowner noticed the couple while leaving his house to pray. It was alleged that the woman shouted at the two to stop, but the warning was ignored.
North Kuta police described the incident as "immoral behavior" and claimed the act lasted about 15 minutes.
Police used facial recognition technology to identify the person in the footage as Aspinall. Thus, the young man was caught at the airport as he was about to leave Bali.
However, the legal aspect of the incident took a different turn when the homeowner decided not to press charges.
Badung Police Chief Joseph Edward Purba announced at a press conference that the homeowner asked for an apology from Aspinall and decided not to continue the legal process.
Deportation instead of prison
It was stated that Aspinall could face up to one year in prison if found guilty. However, police handed over the file and the suspect to immigration authorities to initiate deportation proceedings.
Purba said, "We have handed over the case and the suspect to the Immigration Directorate for his deportation."
According to Aspinall's statement to police, the young man had gone to Bali to attend his friend's wedding and had spent four days on the island before the incident.
Aspinall also said he did not know the name of the woman he was with or which country she was from. In his statement, he noted that both had consumed alcohol.
Police investigator Azarul Ahmad reported that Aspinall said he met the woman at a beach club near the house.
The identity of the woman has not yet been determined. Police are continuing their investigation to find the woman, who is believed to be a tourist.
Stricter laws in Bali back on the agenda
Immigration official Teguh Santoso confirmed to Daily Mail that Aspinall will be deported to Australia after administrative procedures are completed.
The incident also brought back to the agenda the stricter morality and public order rules that have recently come into effect in Bali and Indonesia in general.
