Vigilant monitoring by customs teams at an airport in India has uncovered an unbelievable smuggling method. In two separate incidents that occurred on the same day, thousands of dollars and hundreds of grams of gold hidden inside kitchen utensils were seized. What emerged from the pot lids in luggage searched on suspicion once again revealed the extraordinary methods employed by smugglers.
Customs teams at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India's capital, thwarted two unusual smuggling attempts on the same day. What emerged from the baggage searches of two separate passengers, identified through intelligence and risk analysis efforts, astonished onlookers.
DOLLARS IN A POT LID
The first incident came to light during the baggage check of a passenger arriving at the airport to travel to Dubai. After the X-ray scan revealed a suspicious density in the suitcase, teams launched a detailed search. The inspection uncovered a total of $15,500 skillfully hidden in the suitcase's specially constructed false bottom and inside a pot lid.
24-CARAT GOLD POURED FROM THE HANDLE SECTION
In the day's second operation, another passenger who arrived at Delhi Terminal-1 from Riyadh via an Istanbul connection was the target. The kitchen items in the luggage of the passenger, stopped due to suspicious behavior, were taken for examination. When teams dismantled the handle mechanism of the pot lid, they detected 24-carat gold weighing a total of 523 grams, hidden in 15 pieces.
While comprehensive investigations have been launched into both incidents, the seized currency and gold were confiscated by customs enforcement teams.
