CRACKING SOUNDS CAUSED PANIC
The incident occurred around 02:00 in Karanfil Street, Yenişehir Neighborhood, Izmit district. During the foundation excavation of a residential construction site, movement was observed in the adjacent 3-story building with a shop on the ground floor. Residents who heard cracking sounds coming from the building at night went outside. Upon the notification, AFAD, Izmit Municipality, and Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change teams were dispatched to the area.
GROUND SAFETY MEASURES WERE NOT TAKEN
In the initial examination by the teams arriving at the scene, it was determined that necessary ground safety measures had not been taken during the foundation excavation. It was found that the soil under the building had shifted due to the effect of underground waters, and the structure had begun to lean. The teams closed the street to traffic with tape against potential risks and evacuated some nearby buildings as a precaution.
PARTIES AGREED, THE BUILDING WAS DEMOLISHED
Under the coordination of AFAD and municipal authorities, three brothers residing in the building came together with the construction company officials. After the meetings, upon the construction company owner stating that he would cover the financial damages and legal responsibility, it was decided to demolish the building posing a risk. Construction machines at the site demolished the building during the night under security measures taken by police teams.
An investigation has been initiated regarding the incident.
