After the passenger ship on the Girne-Taşucu route capsized, passengers turned to air travel and faced exorbitant ticket prices. On the approximately 50-minute flights between Çukurova and Ercan, some tickets exceeded 35 thousand liras, prompting Girne Mayor Murat Şenkul to react, saying, "We couldn't even step out of a commercial perspective under these conditions; shame on all of us."
The capsizing of the passenger ship operating the Girne-Taşucu route not only caused disruption in maritime transport but also brought noticeable price increases in airline tickets.
As demand for flights increased due to passengers turning to air travel after the accident, ticket prices on the Çukurova International Airport-Ercan Airport route reached striking levels.
35 MINUTE FLIGHT EXCEEDS 35 THOUSAND LIRA
On Çukurova-Ercan flights lasting approximately 45-50 minutes, some ticket prices were observed to exceed 35 thousand lira.
It was noted that with the rapid increase in demand, airlines activated dynamic pricing and last-minute tariffs, and passengers who had to travel urgently, in particular, reacted to the high prices.
"A 6 THOUSAND LIRA TICKET ROSE TO 22 THOUSAND LIRA"
Girne Mayor Murat Şenkul also reacted to the increase in airfare prices. Stating that hundreds of people were waiting at Girne Port to travel, Şenkul said that the increase in demand for flights after the ship accident was normal, but it was unacceptable for prices to reach these levels.
Şenkul pointed out that some tickets, which normally cost around 6 thousand lira, had risen to as much as 22 thousand lira, drawing attention to the situation.
"SHAME ON ALL OF US"
Noting that there were people at the port whose leave periods had ended or who needed to return to their country urgently, Şenkul reacted to the price increase with these words: "If we still cannot move beyond a commercial perspective even under these conditions, shame on all of us."
Şenkul also emphasized that lessons should be learned from what happened and that necessary precautions should be taken to prevent similar situations from occurring again.
