Two foreign nationals in Georgia were arrested by security forces for planning to purchase uranium and radioactive materials worth approximately 3 million dollars; the investigation into illegal nuclear material trafficking is ongoing.
Georgia's national security service detained two foreign nationals in the country for attempting to illegally purchase uranium worth approximately 3 million dollars. According to a report by Reuters, these individuals planned to buy uranium and materials containing radiation that could be used in the production of nuclear weapons and smuggle them to another country.
THEY WOULD HAVE PAID 3 MILLION DOLLARS
The security service stated that the suspects were trying to obtain nuclear material such as uranium and radioactive Cesium-137 for a total of 3 million dollars and aimed to transport it illegally to another country. It was noted that the suspects were arrested in the city of Kutaisi, Georgia.
OFFICIALS DID NOT PROVIDE DETAILS
Officials have not provided details about how enriched the seized uranium is or where these materials came from. Additionally, no information was shared regarding which country or individual or group the parties planned to take these materials to.
SUCH CASES ARE COMMON IN THE COUNTRY
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, many cases of illegal trade in nuclear and radioactive materials have been observed in Georgia. Last year, three Chinese citizens were arrested in the capital Tbilisi for attempting to illegally purchase uranium, and similar incidents across the country have been investigated by security services in international cooperation.
