A major landslide in Pengshui County, Chongqing, China, has caused over 10 buildings to collapse. Hundreds of personnel have launched rescue efforts for those trapped under the debris, with at least 10 people rescued so far. Due to the risk of further landslides, more than 1,100 people have been evacuated.
A major landslide in the morning hours in Pengshui County, under the jurisdiction of Chongqing Municipality in southwest China, caused widespread destruction. Around 09:08 local time, a massive mass of rock and soil broke off from a mountain slope near the Wujiang River and slid into a residential area.
Images shared on social media showed a section of the mountain collapsing within seconds, numerous buildings buried under the soil, and the surrounding area covered in a thick cloud of dust.
MORE THAN 10 BUILDINGS BURIED UNDER SOIL
According to Chinese state media, more than 10 residential buildings were buried under the landslide debris. Some multi-story buildings remained standing despite severe damage. The number of people trapped under the rubble has not yet been confirmed, while rescue teams continue search operations in the area.
10 PEOPLE RESCUED, THOUSANDS EVACUATED
Authorities announced that at least 10 people have been rescued alive from the rubble so far, and those rescued are not in life-threatening condition. Due to the risk of possible new landslides, more than 1,100 people in the area have been evacuated to safe locations.
OVER 800 RESCUE PERSONNEL ON THE SCENE
Following the incident, China's Ministry of Emergency Management activated a level two national geological disaster emergency response. More than 800 search and rescue personnel, numerous construction machines, and specialized equipment were dispatched to the area. Search efforts continue despite the risk of further landslides.
ELECTRICITY, WATER, AND NATURAL GAS CUT OFF
For safety reasons, electricity, water, and natural gas supply have been cut off in an area approximately 1 kilometer around the landslide zone. Additionally, over 8,000 relief supplies, including tents, folding beds, and emergency aid kits, have been sent to the disaster area.
