The state stepped in to help a woman living in a vineyard house between the rural neighborhoods of Kuyucular and Kanyaşı in the Efeler district of Aydın, whose belly grew day by day, reaching 170 kilograms. The woman was taken to the hospital by teams from the Aydın Governorship Provincial Health Directorate and underwent surgery, with a mass weighing exactly 40 kilograms removed from her abdomen.
A 40-kilogram mass was surgically removed from the abdomen of 67-year-old Leyla Demirkafa, who had been forced to live on a sofa bed in Aydın for 15 years.
HER ABDOMEN BEGAN TO SWELL AFTER BECOMING A MOTHER FOR THE SECOND TIME
According to the information obtained, Leyla Demirkafa's abdomen began to swell in 1993 after she became a mother for the second time. Living in poverty and hardship in a vineyard house between Kanyaşı and Kuyucular neighborhoods in Efeler, the abdominal swelling and the resulting mass grew larger every day. Due to both economic reasons and lack of awareness at the time, the mass, which was not addressed, continued to grow. The unfortunate woman, unable to move or even lie in bed because of the giant mass in her abdomen, faced such difficulties that her plight became the subject of news two weeks ago. Upon learning of the situation, Aydın Governor Dr. Osman Varol ordered the Provincial Health Directorate to hospitalize Leyla Demirkafa.
At Atatürk State Hospital, the unfortunate woman first had her wounds treated and infection cleared, and then she was operated on by Dr. Çağrı Coşkun and his team.

During the surgery at Aydın Atatürk State Hospital, a mass reaching exactly 40 kilograms was successfully removed from Leyla Demirkafa's body, a rare occurrence. Demirkafa, who successfully overcame the surgery and intensive care processes, was admitted to the ward.

Leyla Demirkafa, who herself could not believe her condition after the surgery and felt as if reborn, thanked those who extended a helping hand, especially Aydın Governor Dr. Osman Varol, Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu for providing attendant services, Provincial Health Director Eser Şenkul, Atatürk State Hospital Chief Physician Niyazi Kocakplan, and Dr. Çağrı Coşkun and his team who performed the surgery.

Niyazi Kocakaplan, Chief Physician of Aydın Atatürk State Hospital, who is closely monitoring Leyla Demirkafa and noted that the patient's health is improving day by day, stated that the patient was brought to the hospital last week by home health unit teams and her surgery was successfully performed. He said, "Approximately a 40-kilogram mass was removed from her abdomen. The mass was successfully taken out. Our aunt Leyla's treatment continues."
