According to a report in the New York Post, US President Donald Trump, known for his harsh criticism of the United Nations in the past, has put forward a surprising name for the organization's top leadership. Trump is said to support installing current FIFA President Gianni Infantino as the replacement for António Guterres, whose term expires at the end of the year.

The biggest factor behind Trump’s proposal is reportedly the close relationship he built with Infantino during the preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to the claim making waves in Washington circles, Trump views Infantino’s international reputation, his ability to bring different countries together, and his management experience at FIFA as key advantages for UN leadership.

The claim that Trump supports the FIFA President has sparked widespread reactions in the international community due to his past stance toward the UN. During his first term, Trump criticized the UN as “a club where people gather to have a good time, but nothing gets solved”; he withdrew the US from the UN Human Rights Council and UNESCO, and cut funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
