U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has suspended the 25% tariff imposed on Mexico for one month in exchange for the country increasing its border security and sending 10,000 troops to the border.
US President Donald Trump made a statement on his social media account regarding the 25% increase in customs duties on Mexico that came into effect on February 1.
AGREEMENT ON BORDER SECURITY
Trump stated that his phone conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum went very well and that they mutually agreed on border security.
10,000 SOLDIERS HEADING TO THE BORDER
In his statement, Trump said, "I just had a very friendly conversation with President Sheinbaum. (Sheinbaum) agreed to immediately send 10,000 soldiers to the border separating Mexico and the United States. We also agreed to immediately suspend the customs duties planned for the one-month period during which we will negotiate."
"I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO IT"
Trump noted that with this step, the passage of fentanyl and irregular migrants to the US would be prevented, and he expressed that he is looking forward to the commercial negotiations with Mexico.
TRADE WARS
Trump had signed a decree yesterday imposing a 25% additional customs duty on imports from Canada and Mexico, and a 10% additional customs duty on imports from China. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in a press conference held hours after Trump signed the customs duty decrees that customs duties would be imposed on imports from the US in retaliation for Trump's tariffs. Trudeau stated that a 25% customs duty would be applied to imports worth 155 billion Canadian dollars from the US, and that the customs duties on products worth 30 billion Canadian dollars would come into effect tomorrow, while those on the remaining 125 billion Canadian dollars worth of products would take effect in 21 days. China, which condemned the tax decision of the Trump administration, stated that it would appeal to the World Trade Organization against the US and would take "countermeasures" against the decision.
