U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would impose sanctions on Colombia for not accepting the immigrants he has deported to prevent irregular migration. Trump stated that he would increase the customs duties imposed on Colombia by 50% within a week and would apply financial and banking sanctions to Colombian government officials.

After officially taking office as the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump accelerated his efforts to curb irregular migration.

Similar to 2019, Trump declared a National Emergency regarding the U.S.-Mexico border and began deporting irregular migrants. It was stated that the deported migrants would be sent to Colombia.

PROVOCATIVE MOVE FROM COLOMBIA

Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that he would not accept planes carrying migrants deported by U.S. President Donald Trump into his country.

TRUMP ANNOUNCED SANCTIONS

Following Colombia's move, Trump announced that he had decided to impose sanctions on the country. Trump stated, "We will increase the customs duties we apply to Colombia by 50% within a week," and added, "We will impose financial and banking sanctions on Colombia. We will revoke the visas of Colombian government officials."

WHAT HAPPENED?

After officially taking office, Trump stated that he would end the flow of irregular migrants at the border with strict measures, signed a new presidential decree to increase security measures at the U.S.-Mexico border, and decided to send an additional 1,500 troops to the border.

Trump also announced that foreign "development aid" would be suspended for 90 days to assess the consistency of his foreign policy objectives.
