Turkey's first floating production platform "Osman Gazi", which will double natural gas production in the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea, will be sent off from Filyos today to its duty station in the Blue Homeland. Osman Gazi, which will serve at the designated location for 20 years, will operate almost like a factory and deliver the processed natural gas ready for use to the national grid.

"Türkiye's first floating production platform" Osman Gazi is preparing to double domestic natural gas production in the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea. Osman Gazi will be sent off from Filyos to the Black Sea today with the participation of Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar.

The floating production platform, first announced to the public by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in July 2024, draws attention with its enormous dimensions. The platform, about 3 football fields long, has a total length of 298.5 meters, a width of 56 meters, and a depth of 29.5 meters.

IT UNDERWENT MODIFICATION WORK IN FILYOS

President Erdoğan, who announced on May 27, 2025 that they had named the platform "Osman Gazi," also sent Osman Gazi off from the Dolmabahçe Working Office to Filyos on May 29, 2025. While undergoing accreditation and certification processes in Zonguldak Filyos, Osman Gazi was virtually rebuilt. The platform, which has a total of 21 separate facilities on its topside, underwent modification work in Filyos before its Black Sea mission. In this scope, 11 facilities were rebuilt in accordance with the characteristics of the Sakarya Gas Field, while 7 of them were produced in Türkiye and 4 abroad. 10 facilities were modified in line with the characteristics of the Sakarya Gas Field and integrated into the platform.

The platform, where approximately 6 kilometers of cabling was carried out per day during maintenance and preparation processes, has a total of 642 kilometers of electrical cable. Approximately 7,000 people took part in the work carried out before Osman Gazi's Black Sea mission, during which about 30 kilometers of piping work was performed.

In August 2026, the Flare Tower, which ensures the safe removal and evacuation of hydrocarbon gases released in emergencies, was mounted on the platform. The flare tower, 96 meters high, with a base area of approximately 65 square meters and a weight of 260 tons, was successfully placed in its position on the platform.

IT WILL REMAIN IN SERVICE FOR 20 YEARS

The Osman Gazi Floating Production Platform will be sent off from Filyos Port to the Black Sea today. Osman Gazi, with a personnel capacity of 140 people, will serve at the designated location for 20 years on a 24/7 basis. Operating almost like a factory approximately 170 kilometers from land, Osman Gazi will deliver processed natural gas ready for use to the national grid.

IT WILL INCREASE PRODUCTION TO 20 MILLION CUBIC METERS

Osman Gazi will increase the current daily production of 9.5 million cubic meters in the Sakarya Gas Field to double, that is, 20 million cubic meters. While 4 million households currently use domestic natural gas, with Osman Gazi coming into operation, the natural gas needs of a total of 8 million households will be met from the Black Sea. The gas Osman Gazi will produce every day will correspond to a financial magnitude of approximately 10 million dollars at today's gas prices. It is calculated that the platform will contribute 3.5 billion dollars annually to the Turkish economy.

FIRST GAS WILL BE BURNED THIS YEAR

After Osman Gazi is sent off for duty, it is planned that the first gas will be burned from the platform's flare tower by the end of this year and production will begin at the beginning of 2027. Thus, the second phase in the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea will be completed.
