Two boats carrying Rohingya Muslims have sunk off the coast of Myanmar, with more than 500 people believed to be on board. The UN and IOM have issued a call to save lives.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) stated, "Two boats, mostly carrying Rohingya Muslim migrants, are believed to have sunk off the coast of Myanmar, with more than 500 people estimated to be on board."
JOURNEY OF HOPE ENDS IN TRAGEDY
Rohingya Muslims, who have been trying to reach safe areas for years due to violence and harsh living conditions in Myanmar, risk their lives through dangerous sea journeys, and one such journey has ended in tragedy.
In a statement issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), it was reported that two boats, mostly carrying Rohingya Muslim migrants, sank off the coast of Myanmar.
MORE THAN 500 PEOPLE WERE ON THE TWO BOATS
The statement added, "It is estimated that more than 500 people were on the boats. We and IOM (International Organization for Migration) are deeply concerned by these reports and call for stronger efforts to save lives."
In a joint statement, IOM and UNHCR reported that among the passengers were some individuals from refugee camps in Bangladesh.
