The U.S. Department of State stated that Turkey's "legitimate concerns" regarding the terrorist threat posed by the PKK in northern Syria are understood. U.S. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller answered journalists' questions about developments in Syria during the daily press briefing. "WE UNDERSTAND LEGITIMATE CONCERNS"Miller stated regarding the threat posed by the PKK/YPG terrorist organization in northern Syria, "With the increase in conflicts in northern Syria at this point, we understand Turkey's legitimate concerns regarding the terrorist threat posed by the PKK." He also noted that they understand Turkey's "very legitimate concerns" about the presence of foreign fighters in Syria, emphasizing that this is why the U.S. has been discussing these concerns with the Turkish government and is trying to "find a way forward." "FOREIGN FIGHTERS MUST BE DEPORTED"Miller said, "What we want to see is the establishment of a Syrian national government that encompasses all ethnic groups within Syria." Pointing out that there should be no "sub-national militia groups" carrying arms under separate flags at the end of the process, Miller expressed that discussing the deportation of foreign fighters from Syria is "absolutely appropriate." "THE DECISION WILL BE MADE BY THE SYRIAN PEOPLE"In response to a question about what the new political system in Syria should be, Miller replied, "This is a decision that will be made by the Syrian people, not the U.S." Miller noted that the Syrian people should make decisions within a framework that represents their aspirations and the normal compromises that occur in civil society while forming their government and constitutions. Stating that the U.S. stands at the point of reminding the main principles in this process, Miller emphasized the importance of adopting a "transparent and inclusive constitution" in Syria.
