Moldova, which is continuing its European Union accession process, is preparing for a change in its visa policy. As part of harmonization with EU legislation, the possibility of imposing a visa requirement on citizens of 11 countries, including Turkey, has come onto the agenda. If the regulation under consideration by Moldova's government—which is visited by many Turks every year—is implemented, Turkish citizens' opportunity to travel to the country visa-free may come to an end.
The possibility of imposing a visa requirement on Turkey came onto the agenda with the harmonization steps Moldova has taken in its European Union accession process. It was stated that changes could be made to the country's current travel rules.
VISA REQUIREMENT FOR TURKISH CITIZENS ON THE AGENDA
Moldova, which continues its efforts to join the European Union, aims to harmonize its border security and visa practices with the Union's rules. The regulation being evaluated within this scope may also affect the visa-free travel arrangement between Turkey and Moldova. According to statements by Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, the possibility of imposing a visa requirement on citizens of 11 countries, including Turkey, is being considered. The change in question has not yet entered into force. Therefore, there is no decision indicating that a visa requirement will definitely begin for Turkish citizens.
EU ACCESSION PROCESS AFFECTS VISA POLICY
Behind the possibility of Moldova changing its visa policy is the goal of joining the European Union. Countries preparing for EU membership must harmonize their existing national regulations with Union legislation. According to reports in the country's local press, Moldova is also reassessing its foreign policy, border security, and conditions of entry into the country in this direction.
10 MORE COUNTRIES BESIDES TURKEY MAY BE AFFECTED
The possible regulation does not cover only Turkey. According to the information conveyed, Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan are also among the countries where the visa practice may change.
