Wilson reacted to the outrageous remarks made about Turkey during an official ceremony attended by government officials in Iran, which was also broadcast on state television IRINN. Strongly condemning the anti-Turkey statements, Wilson said, "I condemn the defamatory statements of the terrorist regime in Iran against NATO ally Turkey and Azerbaijan. As clearly seen in Syria, Turkey, a NATO ally, is a critical partner against the terrorist regime in Tehran."

The official ceremony in the city of Ardabil, Iran, attended by government officials, was broadcast live by state television IRINN. During the ceremony, outrageous remarks were made about Turkey and Azerbaijan, as well as President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. In the broadcast, harsh criticisms were directed at the policies of both countries and their leaders. Following the incident, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Iranian Chargé d'Affaires in Baku to the ministry.
