Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş announced that a working group has been established to regulate social media usage for children under the age of 15, and the relevant regulation will come into force within six months. The regulation aims to create safe digital spaces, promote controlled usage, and implement age verification systems through methods such as e-Government.
Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş answered journalists' questions following the Cabinet Meeting chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Presidential Complex.
"WE DEVELOPED A MODEL UNIQUE TO OUR COUNTRY"
Minister Göktaş stated that similar practices are on the agenda worldwide regarding the regulation of social media use for children under 15, and each country is conducting its own studies. Göktaş said, "After reviewing the report from Australia in particular, we made all necessary evaluations and, by completing the deficiencies, developed a model unique to our country."
CONTROLLED USE WILL BE ENCOURAGED
Emphasizing that the law, which includes regulations on social media, will create safe digital spaces for children under 15 and encourage controlled use, Göktaş reported that they aim to prevent children from being exposed to content inappropriate for their age and development.
"WE ARE CARRYING IT OUT IN FULL COORDINATION"
Minister Göktaş noted the following:
"We have established a working group within our ministry to determine the principles for the implementation of the regulation on social media use. We are conducting the process in full coordination with relevant institutions and organizations. In this working group, which we will carry out together with public institutions and other stakeholders, we will determine the principles for social media use of children under 15 in a short time and implement the relevant regulation within 6 months. When this regulation we are working on is completed, the new social media regulation will come into effect across all of Turkey."
Emphasizing that the new period will not be limited to only a legal regulation, Göktaş reported that technical infrastructure and implementation mechanisms are also being prepared comprehensively. Göktaş noted that they will implement the age verification system, based on the obligations imposed on social network providers by the law, along with different verification methods, primarily e-Government, and that this system will be established in coordination with the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) and the Cyber Security Presidency.
