White House's confession about Turkey: Not invalid concerns.

White House's confession about Turkey: Not invalid concerns.

10.01.2025 21:21

White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby stated that Turkey's security concerns in the fight against ISIS in Syria are not unfounded. Emphasizing that they respect Turkey's concerns, Kirby noted that their cooperation with the PKK/YPG is limited to the fight against ISIS.

White House National Security Council Spokesman John Kirby made remarks concerning Turkey during a press briefing held via teleconference.

"TALKS WITH TURKEY ON PKK/YPG CONTINUE"

In response to a question, Kirby stated that their main mission in Syria is to combat ISIS and that talks with Turkey regarding the terrorist organization PKK/YPG are ongoing, but he would not go into details.

"TURKEY'S CONCERNS ARE NOT INVALID CONCERNS"

Evaluating the communication traffic between Washington and Ankara regarding the situation in Syria, Kirby noted that they understand Turkey's security concerns related to northern Syria. Kirby said, "As I have stated before, we understand their (the Turks') security concerns. To be honest, Turkey's concerns are not invalid concerns."

CONTINUING COOPERATION WITH PKK/YPG

Stating that they only cooperate with the terrorist organization PKK/YPG, known as SDF in Syria, in the context of fighting ISIS, Kirby said: "I would like to emphasize again why we are in Syria. We are there because we are part of the coalition to fight ISIS. Although ISIS has been largely weakened, it continues to be an active threat. That is why our troops are working in cooperation with SDF to take action against ISIS. That is what we are doing there. There is no change in this mission."

"WE DO NOT WANT TO SEE ANY IMPACTS"

The American advisor stated that they understand Ankara's security concerns stemming from PKK/YPG, but at the same time, they do not want to see any steps that would make the situation, especially in northern Syria, "more unstable than it is." Kirby also added that they do not want the "capacity of PKK/YPG elements to partner in anti-ISIS operations" to be negatively affected.

WILL FRANCE SEND TROOPS TO SYRIA?

When asked about the current discussions regarding the possibility of French troops being sent to Syria, Kirby stated that the issue is not related to the U.S. and therefore he would not comment, adding that Ankara and Paris would express their reactions on this matter on their own behalf.
