Three children aged 8, 6, and 2 were rescued at the last moment from a fire that broke out in a two-story shanty in Antalya. Firefighters, who carried the children out of the room affected by smoke, were moved to learn that the children would be taken to the hospital by ambulance after being rescued, and one of them said with tears in their eyes, "My mom has no money." When the firefighter heard this, he reassured the child by saying, "They won't take any money there."
THE SHANTY WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES
The incident occurred around 14:40 yesterday in 5432nd Street, Esentepe Neighborhood, Kepez district. Smoke from a burning stove in a room on the first floor of the shanty quickly spread throughout the house. The three small children left alone in the house were trapped between smoke and flames. Employees of the market across the street, hearing the children's cries, bravely tried to intervene with fire extinguishers to rescue them.
"DON'T TAKE ME ANYWHERE"
Upon the neighborhood residents notifying 112, teams from the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department quickly arrived at the scene and rescued the children from the flames. Firefighters carried the smoke-affected children in their arms and placed them in the ambulance. After being taken to the ambulance, the children expressed their fear to the firefighter and medical teams. One child said, "Don't take me anywhere, you will do something at the hospital," voicing their fear. In response, the firefighter tried to calm the child by saying, "We won't do anything at the hospital, we will just take care of you." Hearing the medical staff say, "She is afraid her mom will be angry," the firefighter reassured the child, saying, "Your mom will come too, just wait."
"MY MOM HAS NO MONEY"
Upon hearing the 8-year-old boy cry, "My mom has no money," the firefighter and medical teams comforted him by saying, "They won't take any money at the hospital." The firefighter continued to reassure him by pointing to his 6-year-old sibling, saying, "Don't cry, look, is your sibling crying? Don't be afraid, they won't do anything to you there, they will take care of you and send you back." The medical teams also calmed the children with the words, "Your mom will be very happy when she sees you are better."
Meanwhile, while the fire crews continued their efforts to extinguish the fire, citizens reacted to the children's loneliness.
Residents of the neighborhood claimed that the children were often left home alone. One resident said, "The mother of these children constantly goes begging, and their father is in prison. Four children live in the house, and three were inside during the fire. The children were alone. We want these children to be protected by the state."
CHILDREN CALMED WITH CHOCOLATE
It was learned that two of the three children in the ambulance were in good health, while one was affected by smoke. The medical teams tried to calm the children by giving them chocolate to make them feel safe. It is estimated that the fire was caused by an accident related to the stove, and the police have launched an investigation into the incident.
