Yılmaz Erdoğan, who was at the center of criticism due to the kam drum scene in the series Organize İşler: Karun Hazinesi broadcast on Netflix, broke his silence. Following his meeting with GÖK-DER executives, Erdoğan published a statement on his social media account and apologized to the public.
THE KAM DRUM SCENE DREW REACTIONS
In the eight-episode series, which premiered on October 16, the use of the kam drum—regarded as a sacred symbol in ancient Turkic belief—like an ordinary musical instrument in a scene about illegal drug trafficking caused reactions. With the protest of viewers who stated that cultural and religious values were damaged, the series' IMDb rating dropped from 5.7 to 2.5.
X ACCOUNT SUSPENDED
Following the debates, Yılmaz Erdoğan's X account was suspended, while the issue also reflected on the 63rd Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival; jury member and musician Gökhan Kırdar drew attention to the instrument's sacred name 'Tüür' and reminded that it should be used in appropriate settings.
"I APOLOGIZE TO EVERYONE ON BEHALF OF MY TEAM"
After the reactions, Yılmaz Erdoğan hosted GÖK-DER executives and, in a statement on his Instagram account, noted that they had no ill intent while shooting the scene and used the following expressions: "I have always respected the ancient culture, history, belief, and national and spiritual values of the Turkish nation. I have expressed this approach in my works for years. I did not know the sensitivity that using the Kam Drum as a musical instrument damages its sacredness. I accept that the situation in question was a negligence stemming from lack of knowledge. I apologize on behalf of my team to everyone whose feelings we hurt, even unintentionally."
