Orbay Secondary School in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, affiliated with the Ministry of National Education, hosted an event themed "Zero Waste" on June 2, 2026, within the scope of Climate and Environment Week, to strengthen environmental awareness and raise awareness for a sustainable future.
Under the coordination of Kemal Terkan and with contributions from teachers Tuğçe Hobek and Büşra Enez, students were educated on waste separation at source, recycling, and conservation of natural resources as part of the project.
Throughout the event, students carried out hands-on activities on the correct separation of paper, plastic, glass, and metal waste. With recycling points set up across the school, the aim was to reintroduce waste into the economy, while students conveyed the zero waste culture to their peers and parents through posters and presentations they prepared. The workshop and concert organized by the Fungistanbul group, which attended the event, were met with great interest from students; these activities combining art and environmental awareness added a special touch to the day.
Throughout the day, students held a fashion show on a red carpet wearing outfits designed from waste materials, showcasing the creative side of recycling. Zero waste-themed quiz competitions and games combined fun with learning, ensuring students participated enthusiastically in the event.
STUDENTS' "ZERO WASTE" MESSAGE FOR THE FUTURE Project coordinator Kemal Terkan stated in his remarks: "Zero waste is not just a recycling activity; it is a way of life. Our students acquire this awareness at school and carry it into their own lives and families. This project was realized under my coordination with contributions from our teachers Tuğçe and Büşra. The intensive work led by Emine Erdoğan, Alparslan Bayraktar, and Samed Ağırbaş on zero waste in Turkey is of great importance; in this context, raising our children with the same consciousness is especially valuable to us. Our greatest goal is for our children, to whom we will entrust our future, to grow up as environmentally conscious individuals."
The event, carried out in alignment with the Ministry of National Education's environmental and sustainability policies, took place with the active participation of school administration, teachers, students, and parents. At the end of the event, students who adopted eco-friendly behaviors were presented with participation certificates.
Orbay Secondary School plans to continue similar environmental projects in the future by making zero waste practices a permanent part of the school culture.
