In the import of corn, a tariff quota of 1 million tons will be applied for use until July 31, 2025.
The Presidential Decision regarding the matter and the "Communiqué on the Implementation of Tariff Quota in Corn Imports" prepared by the Ministry of Trade has been published in the Official Gazette.
According to the statement made by the Ministry, in order to prevent speculative prices by correctly guiding the markets, ensure supply security for basic food products, and meet the country's needs through the encouragement of domestic production, necessary measures are being taken in a coordinated manner with relevant institutions and organizations, using trade policy tools, by evaluating producer and consumer welfare together.
CUSTOMS DUTY WILL BE APPLIED AT 0 PERCENT
In this context, upon the request of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, in order to maintain the supply-demand balance and price stability of corn, which is critical for the production of basic consumer goods, primarily poultry and red meat, as well as other various food products, and which experienced a significant decline in production last year, a tariff quota has been opened for the 1 million tons that is insufficient to meet the consumption of domestic corn production until July 31, taking into account the upward trend in world prices. Until this date, the customs duty will be applied at 0 percent.
DOMESTIC CORN PRODUCERS WILL BE PROTECTED
This application, which allows imports of a limited amount of product, will end on August 1, 2025, before the harvest period of the product, in order to protect domestic corn producers. After this date, the customs duty on corn imports will continue to be applied at 130 percent. In order to benefit fairly from the tariff quota, a user can carry out a maximum of 8,000 tons of imports at one time. The same importer will need to wait 7 days to make another import under the tariff quota.
The Ministry of Trade will continue to closely monitor the supply, demand, and price levels in the market in consultation with other institutions and organizations, primarily the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and will implement the necessary regulations in a timely manner.
RELATED DECISIONS WILL COME INTO EFFECT TOMORROW
On the other hand, the Presidential Decision on "Amendment to the Decision on the Implementation of Additional Customs Duty in Imports" has also been published in the Official Gazette.
