The Nipah virus, identified as being transmitted from bats, has caused panic in the Indian state of West Bengal. The virus, which can spread from animals to humans and from human to human, initially shows no symptoms but can quickly lead to severe respiratory issues, brain inflammation, and coma. With no treatment or vaccine available and a mortality rate between 40% and 75% that can lead to coma within 24 to 48 hours, the Nipah virus is raising concerns in the region.
A suspected deadly outbreak emerging in India's West Bengal state has put the health system on high alert. Authorities have begun implementing extraordinary measures to prevent the spread of the virus following cases detected in areas close to large settlements.

According to health authorities, the Nipah virus has been detected in settlements near the state capital, Kolkata. Initial investigations have decided to conduct urgent contact tracing to control the disease, and individuals in the risk group have been placed under observation.
As part of the efforts initiated due to the outbreak possibility, tests were conducted on 180 individuals, while 20 people were quarantined as a precaution. Experts emphasize that the Nipah virus can be transmitted from animals to humans, particularly through bats and pigs, and also carries a risk of spreading from human to human. Fruit bats, commonly found throughout India, are known to be natural carriers of the virus.
HEALTH PERSONNEL ALSO INFECTED WITH THE VIRUS
According to reports from the Press Trust of India, three new infections were confirmed during the week. Among these cases are a doctor, a nurse, and a healthcare worker. It was previously reported that the test results of two nurses, one female and one male, who worked at a private hospital in Barasat, were also positive.
Authorities reported that the condition of one of the mentioned nurses is critical, showing high fever and severe respiratory symptoms. It was stated that the nurse in serious condition fell into a coma after intervening with a patient who had recently experienced severe respiratory failure, and her health deteriorated rapidly. It was noted that this patient passed away without necessary tests being conducted.

Authorities indicate that individuals infected with the Nipah virus may initially show no symptoms, but acute respiratory issues can emerge quickly. During the course of the disease, complaints such as high fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, and sore throat can be observed.
